behaviour therapy applications Flashcards
what is flooding
where fear is elicited by a CS (phobia) - it is eliminated by extinction
issue of flooding?
some therapists think it is too stressful for patients
Stimulus Generalization
a CR formed to a CS will occur to other similar stimulus
(little albert fearing all furry animals - not just white rat)
Stimulus Discrimination
when stimuli are not generalized to eachother
what is spontaneous recovery?
a CS - CR relation is extinguished
after a period where no CS presentations, the CS may elicit the CR again - but not as strong
treatment for anxieties etc.
how could you treat phobias etc?
systematic Desensitization
- Combine ideas from extinction, stimulus generalization and counterconditioning
between subjects design?
each level of manipulated variable is given to a different set of participants
within subjects design?
each participant experiences two or more levels of the manipulated variable
what is counter conditioning
conditioning of an unwanted behavior or response to a stimulus into a wanted behavior or response by the association of positive actions with the stimulus.
what is systematic generalization?
a method to treat phobias - combines extinction, stimulus generalisation and counterconditioning
what is latent learning?
Learning that is not immediately reflected in performance and is only evident in certain contexts.
Learning from experience when there appears no obvious reinforcement or
punishment for the specific behaviour.
(not apparent in the learner’s behavior at the time of learning, but which manifests later when a suitable motivation and circumstances appear)
