SIDS Flashcards
tell me a little bit about SIDS
- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
- no sign of suffering
common conception of SIDS
bed sharing increases risk of SIDS
Associations - more likely to die of SIDS
(NZ study)
mother smokes when pregnant
low birth weight
premature birth
Maori - socioeconomic status
3 more associations…(SIDS)
smoke in the house (mum and/or dad)
bed sharing
sleeping on back - decreases likelihood of SIDS
overall, what does SIDS research indicate?
- don’t share a bed if parent has been drinking
- or if parent is ill
is bonding more difficult following a C section?
hypothesis
‘bonding between mother and infant will be greater if infant undergoes vaginal delivery’
tell me about what happens during vaginal delivery…
the hormone Oxytocin is released - which functions as a neurotransmitter. Women secrete more than men
what is Oxytocin?
relates to bonding and empathy - ‘love drug’
what is a study relating to C-section hypothesis?
mother’s brain responses to own infants and other infant’s cries
what were the results of that brain study?
vag delivery mothers had greater activation in the brain when heard infants cry - compared to C-section mums
what is the ‘answer’ to the vag delivery conception?
the research indicates that initial bonding is greater for mothers that had a vaginal delivery than for C-section - but that bond develops anyways (no matter how the baby came out)
what happens when oxytocin is given to fathers?
it increases contact with children leading to warmer parenting
