What is social control?
Various methods used to persuade or force individuals to conform to society’s norms and values. This is imposed by agents of social control.
What are the two forms of agents of social control?
Informal
Formal
What are informal agents of social control?
People who impose social control but it’s not their main role e.g. teachers, parents, friends.
What are formal agents of social control?
People who exists purely to enforce social control e.g. Police, government, security guards, court system.
What are sanctions?
The actions that are used to ensure social control is achieved.
What are the two types of sanctions?
Positive
Negative
What are positive sanctions?
Rewards for conforming to social norms and values.
What are negative sanctions?
Punishments for those who break norms and values.
