What is social class?
A group of people who share a similar economic situation such as occupation, income and wealth.
What are the three social classes?
Upper, middle and working class
What is the upper class like?
Very small but they own the majority of society’s wealth.
Who is apart of the upper class?
The aristocracy and wealthy industrialists and business people.
What is the middle class like?
Very large class, characterised by non-manual occupations.
What is the middle class separated into?
Upper middle
Middle middle
Lower middle
Who is in the upper middle class?
People with high status and well-paid professional occupations e.g. doctors, surgeons.
Who is in the middle middle class?
People with occupations with status and good pay but less than upper middle e.g. nurse, teacher.
Who is in the lower middle class?
People with routine clerical and administrative occupations e.g. office workers.
What is the working class like?
Very large social class characterised by manual work.
What is the working class separated into?
Skilled manual
Semi-skilled manual
Unskilled manual
Who is skilled manual?
Builder, plumber etc.
Who is semi-skilled manual?
Shop assistant, waiter / waitress.
Who is unskilled manual?
Labourer
