Which family structures today don’t fit with Murdock’s definition?
Same sex couples/marriage
Couples with no children/unmarried
People that live together (e.g. friends)
Single parent families
What is a family?
A group of people related by kinship ties, relations of blood, marriage, civil partnership or adoption
What is a household?
A group of people living together who may or may not be related and share things such as meals, bills, facilities or chores
May also be a single person living alone
What is a nuclear family?
The basic family structure consisting of a heterosexual couple living together with biologically related children
What is an extended family?
Any group of kin extended beyond the nuclear family unit
This can be done vertically (i.e. grandparents) or horizontally (i.e. aunts, uncles, cousins) or both
What is the modified extended family?
Family members may live some distance apart but keep in regular contact through text, phone conversations etc.
What is monogamy?
A relationship with one person at one time
What is serial monogamy?
A series of monogamous marriages, one after the other
