Deviance is any act that breaks social norms
What does crime refer to?
Crime is an act that breaks the law
Most crimes are also deviant, but some deviant acts are not criminal
What are crime and deviance constructed by?
Constructed by norms and values of a particular society
What are formal agents of social control?
People who exist solely to create and enforce the law
What are informal agents of social control?
People who control the behaviour of others but its not their main role
What do agents of social control impose?
Impose sanctions to ensure people conform to societies norms and values
What are positive sanctions?
Rewards for good behaviour
What are negative sanctions?
Punishments for breaking norms and values
