Participants are interviewed as a group rather than individually
What are the strengths of group interviews when researching anti-school subcultures?
May feel more comfortable being with people who have the same attitude towards school as them
What are the weaknesses of group interviews when researching anti-school subcultures?
May lie about their feelings towards school to try and impress which will reduce the validity of findings
What are the strengths of group interviews?
Funding - cheaper to interview several people at the same time
Quicker to conduct than one-to-one unstructured interviews
Informed consent
Produce qualitative data - interpretivists like
Validity - gain a true picture
What are the weaknesses of group interviews?
May lack validity - peer pressure
Lack reliability - every group interview different
Not representative - small sample, cannot be generalised to research population
