What is data?
Information gathered during research
What is primary data?
Data that was collected first hand by the researcher
It didn’t exist before the research was carried out
What is secondary data?
Data that already exists
What is quantitative data?
Data expressed as numbers
What is qualitative data?
Data in any form other than numbers e.g. words, pictures etc
What are two advantages of quantitative data?
Can easily make comparisons between quantitative data - in the same format
Quick and easy to read
What is a disadvantage of quantitative data?
Undetailed information
What is an advantage of qualitative data?
First person perspective / account
What are two disadvantages of qualitative data?
Subjective data - open to interpretation
Time consuming
What is validity?
Data that is true and correct
It measures what it sets out to measure
What is reliability?
Data is reliable if the method could be used again to obtain similar results
What is meant by representative?
If data can be said to reflect a good cross section of the research population
