there is a violent side to nature in japan. a couple of times there have been disasters coming there way that completely missed them. therefore they feel protected by gods. the Japanese people have also become stoic in the sense that they have adapted and adjusted to all of the disasters.

describe kami in shinto
shinto is based on the belief that sacred spirits called kami take the form of objects in nature (mountains, trees). humans became kami when they die and are honored by family

festivals held every spring and fall to please the kami of each japanese clan and village

consists of people who have the same values and beliefs

japan began a program of assimilation for ainu. they were forbidden to speak their language or practice many of their customs and were restricted to living in areas the government provided for them

northern island in japan, ainu lived there and japanese took over in a war. changed the name of the land to hokkaido
