Syllables
A unit of pronunciation having one vowel sound, with or without surrounding consonants, forming the whole or part of a sound. Beautiful has 3 syllable
Haiku
a Japanese poem of 17 syllables n 3 lines of 5-7-5. Evokes images of the nature world.
Simile
comparison using “like” or “as” (saying something is like something)
Metaphor
Represent one thing as something else (saying something is something) ex. she is a spider
Personification
Giving human qualities to a thing or idea
Hyperbole
Using exaggeration for effect ex my bag weighs a ton
Onomatopoeia
words that are sounds
Concrete poem
A poem that takes the shape of its subject
rhyme scheme
The ordered pattern of rhymes at the ends of the lines of a poem or verse
rhythm
The arrangement of beats in a line of poetry
repetition
repeats of the same words or phrases
vivid verbs
a colorful or strong action word
hyphen
a punctuation mark used to join words and to separate syllables of a single word ( - )
semicolon
to join two independent clauses without using a conjunction like “and” ( ; ) used to make lines interesting in poems
dash
used to separate parts of words like hyphens ( - ) used to make lines interesting in poems
