what is a narrative prose
form of writing that tells a story through actions. In other words, it means that the writing is in basic language.
plot diagram
Plot is the literary element that shows the outline of a story
short story diagram
- exposition -Intro of the characters, setting, and situation 2. initial incident-conflict, a struggle between opposing forces that drives the action of the story
- rising action- the portion of the story where the conflict increases 4. climax-the peak of action and conflict, the turning point of the story 5. falling action-portion of the story where the conflict decreases 6. resolution- the outcome of the conflict
characterization
process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character (indirect or direct)
indirect characterization
shows things that reveal the personality of the character. There are five methods of indirect characterization.
direct characterization
tells the audience what the personality of the character is or what the character looks like.
Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well-mannered and did not disobey their mother.”
setting
time and place in the story
first person view
A story is narrated by one character at a time, speaking for and about themselves. Pronouns like “I”, “me”, “us”, and “our” are used. This allows the reader or audience to see the point of view only of the narrator, and no other characters.
second person view
The protagonist or another main character is referred to as “you” or “your”.
third person view
Each and every character is referred to by the narrator as “he”, “she”, “it”, or “they”.
foreshadowing
device in which a writer gives a hint of what is to come. (most of the time at the beginning of the story)
conflict
the struggle between 2 opposing forces
central conflict
main character must fight against some force or make important decision
internal conflict
inside a persons mind
mood
a element that envokes certain feelings or vibes in readers through words and descriptions. atmosphere and emotion
tone
attitude of the writer towards the subject. normally through choice of words
Speech, Thoughts, Effect on others toward the character
Actions, Looks in characterization
Speech- What does the character say? How does the character speak?
Thoughts- What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings?
Effects- What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character?
Actions- What does the character do? How does the character behave?
Looks- What does the character look like? How does the character dress?
Types of characters (flat, round, dynamic, static)
Flat- 2 dimensional in that they are relatively uncomplicated and do not change
round- extremely realistic, complex, and increases in complexity
dynamic- undergoes a inner change in personality/attitude
static- little change, doesn’t develop
parody
a humorous imitation of a formal writing. It follows the form of the original, but changes its sense to non sense

words used to describe nouns (person, place, or thing)
protagonist
the leading character or one of the major characters in a story
antagonist
character who opposes protagonist, often a villian
what is STEAL
speech, thoughts, actions, effects on others towards the character, looks
types of conflict
manvs man- protagonist struggles against others/antagonist
man vs self- protagonist struggles with self
man vs beast- protagonist struggles with animals
man vs environment- protagonist struggles against nature
