Deviance
Behaviour that falls outside the norms of what is thought to be acceptable. Goes against moral values
Negative deviance
Deviance with the intention of breaking the rules or causing damage
Positive devicance
Deviance without the intention of causing damage or breaking the rules
Sportsmanship
Qualities of fairness, following the rules and being gracious in defeat or victory
Gamesmanship
Bending the rules of a sport without actually breaking them
Influence of others
Your family may encourage you to partake in a sport and offer financial or emotional support, also friends or role models can inspire you to play a sport
Gender
Womens participation is increasing but fewer women partake than men particularilt football. Because of biased media, fewer opportunities, less funding for women, and stereotyping. Some sports are also gender tagging like netball is considered feminine and boxing masculine
Ethnicity and religion
Some religions have strict guidlines which may affect decisions to participate in sports for example christians won’t do sport on Sundays. Racism is also an issue in sport despite huge efforts to promote racial equality
Socio-economic group
Less likely to participate in sport if from a low socio-economic group. Some sports are inexpensive and easily accessible but others such as golf require money which can prevent some from partaking
Age
Can affect a person’s ability to partake in certain activities for example, weight lifting for children and gymnastics for the elderly
Disability
Less availability to participate in sports but many sports like basketball habe adapted (wheelchair) to enable people with disabilities to play. Events such as paralympics have helped raise the profile of disabled sports
Commercialisation on Sports
Most popular sports and teams generate most money so lesser sports and teams struggle to compete shown through premier league and championship
Commercialisation on sponsors
Poor performance or behaviour can lead to negative press, small companies can’t compete with large companies, some sponsers may be inappropiate for audience-cigarettes
Commercialiasation on media
Broadcasting rights are very expensive so small media companies can’t compete with large media companies
Commercialisation on spectators
Attending events can be expensive, encourages spectating rather than participating, more adverts and disruption to fixtures
