Soc:15 Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Vasodilation
When veins swell up or dilate; widening of the internal diameter (lumen) of the blood vessel to allow increase blood flow
Vasoconstriction
When veins shrink down; narrowing of the internal diameter (lumen) of the blood vessel to decrease blood flow
What are three functions of the cardiovascular system
Blood clot
Body temperature
Transport oxygen carbon dioxide and nutrients
Cardio-respiratory system
The interaction of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to muscles during exercise
Cardiovascular
To do with the heart, blood and blood vessels together
Vascular shunting
Your muscles need more blood for movement and the blood moves away from the organs and to the muscles
Arteries
They carry oxygenated blood away from the heart and through the body
It has thick walls and are more elastic with high pressure
The pulmonary artery is different and carries deoxygenated blood from heart to lung
Veins
Carries deoxygenated blood from the body back to the heart
Thinner walls and less elastic with low pressure
Pulmonary vein is different and carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart
Capillaries
Carry oxygenated blood to transfer blood and nutrients to muscles at one end
Carry deoxygenated blood into the veins and including waste products to take them around the body to dispose of them
Very thin
