Soc15- The Structure Of The Heart Flashcards
Three functions of cardiovascular system
Control body temp
Transport oxygen, nutrients and carbon dioxide
Blood clot
Name the 9 main components of the heart (not including the valves)
Right atrium Right ventricle Left atrium Left ventricle Vena cava Aorta Pulmonary vein Pulmonary artery Septum
Name the three valves in the heart
Bicuspid valve
Tricuspid valve
Semilunar valve
Vena cava
Large artery bringing deoxygenated blood into the heart (inferior and superior).
Septum
The strong muscle that pumps the heart
Pulmonary artery
Large artery carry deoxygenated blood to the lungs
Aorta
Large artery carry oxygenated blood to the working muscle (around the body).
Pulmonary vein
Large vein carry oxygenated blood back into the heart (from the lungs)
What is blood pressure
A measure of the force that your heart uses to pump the blood round your body
Name the two phases of the heart beat
Systole and diastole
What happens during the systole phase
The blood passes from the atriums and fill up into the ventricles
What happens during the second phase of the heart beat (diastole phase).
The blood shoots out from the ventricles into the aorta or pulmonary vein. As this process is occurring the next set of blood then re- fills the atriums once again.
Vasodilation
If your body becomes too hot the blood vessels close to the skin get bigger or dilate. This allows more heat radiate out.
