Soc 25 Energy Use, Diet, Nutrition And Hydration Flashcards
What are the 7 food groups?
Carbohydrates
Fats
Proteins
Vitamins
Minerals
Water
Fibre
What is the function of carbohydrates
Stored in muscles and the liver as glycogen which is quickly converted into glucose and used to provide energy
What is the function of fats?
Provide energy and together with glycogen, help muscles to work.
What is the function of proteins?
Help build muscles and repair damaged tissue. Particulary important for strength athletes
Function of vitamins
A balanced supply of vitamins is essential for the body to function properly
Function of minerals
Essential for a healthy body
Function of water
Accounts for half your body weight. Holds oxygen and is the main component of many cells
Function of fibre
Aids the functioning of the digestive system
What are macronutrients
The types of food that you need in large amounts in your diet: carbohydrates, fats and proteins
What are micronutrients
Parts of your food that you need for normal growth, but only in small amounts- what we usually call vitamins and minerals.
What 4 factors affect your optimum body weight
Your sex, height, bone structure and muscle girth.
Hydration def
Being hydrated means the body has the correct amount of water in cells, tissues and organs to function correctly.
Dehydration def
The loss of water and salts essential for normal body function.
Metabolic rate def
The rate at which metabolic processes take place; the rate at which a body uses up energy.
What is carb loading?
A strategy athletes use to maximise the stores of glycogen in their muscles and liver.
