What us visual guidance?
Showing a learner visually what to do, in a video or by demonstration
What are advantages of visual guidance?
The learner knows what skill they have to perform and what it looks like
What are disadvantages of visual guidance?
If visual guidance is given in video the learners cannot ask questions to clarify their understanding
What is verbal guidance?
Where a learner is explained what to do by a coach (without a demonstration)
What are the advantages of verbal guidance?
Coach can explain in further detail or emphasise specific points about the skill
What are the disadvantages of visual guidance?
Hard for beginners especially if it is to do with a difficult or complicated skill
What is manual/mechanical guidance?
When the coach is actually in contact with the learner as they perform the skill
What are advantages of mechanical/manual guidance?
Coach can help execute the skill safely and feel how the movement should be done
What are the disadvantages of mechanical/manual guidance?
Not possible for all sports
What is intrinsic feedback?
Comes from the performer themselves about how they performed or what contribution they made to a team or game
What is extrinsic feedback?
Comes from an outside source: for example from a teacher or coach. Can motivate them to improve and learn from their practice.
What is concurrent feedback?
Given at the time of the performance, like a coach on the sideline during a match.
What is terminal feedback?
Given at the end of the game or performance it is more reflective of the performance/game
What is an open skill?
Cannot be practised specifically for a match situation
