Macronutrients
Types of food that you need in large amounts in your diet
Complex carbs
Carbs that release energy slowly and over a long period of time.
Found in starchy foods like potatoes and bananas
Simple carbs
Carbs that release energy quickly for a short period of time.
Found in natural sugars in fruits and in refined sugars in cakes
Fats
Provides 2nd source of energy to the body. 30% of total diet.
Found in fatty meats, oils, and butter.
Proteins
Help build and repair damaged muscle tissue.
Found in animals (dairy, eggs, meat) and plants (rice,lentils)
Carbo-loading
A strategy where athletes maximise their carb intake to have as much energy before an event as possible
Micronutrients
Vitamins and minerals that are needed in small amounts for maintaining normal body function
Vitamins
Essential for normal body function.
E.g. vision, red blood cells, teeth.
Minerals
Essential for a healthy body
Iron helps formation of haemoglobin
Calcium helps formation of strong bones
Water
Transports nutrients, waste and hormones around the body.
Also controls the distribution of electrolytes
Fibre
Important in digestion (insoluble fibre) and reducing blood cholesterol (soluble fibre)
Dehydration
The loss of water and salts essential for normal body function

The rate at which metabolic processes take place.
The rate at which the body uses up energy

The body has the correct amount of water in the cells, tissues and organs to function correctly. 2.5 l for men, 2 l for women
