Soc 17 - The Respiratory System Flashcards
Respiration (physical)
The movement of air from outside the body into the cells within tissues
Diaphragm
The primary muscle used in the process of inspiration or inhalation
Trachea
The tube that takes air into the chest
Bronchi
The tubes which pass air from the trachea into the lungs
Bronchioles
Smaller branches that lead air to the alveoli
Alveoli
Tiny sacs where gas exchange occurs
Haemoglobin
A type of protein that binds to oxygen in the blood
Gas exchange
The delivery of oxygen to the lungs and then into the bloodstream and the removal of carbon dioxide from the blood into the lungs.
Oxygen debt
The amount of oxygen needed to break down lactic acid at the end of a physical activity
Anaerobic exercise
Working at a high intensity level without oxygen to respire
VO2 max
The volume of oxygen an athlete can consume while exercising at maximum capacity
Tidal volume
The normal volume of air displaced between normal inspiration and exhalation at rest or during exercise
Vital capacity
the maximum amount of air a person can expel from the lungs after a maximum inhalation
