Soc 16 Flashcards
Arteries (3 main characteristics)
Take blood (oxygenated) AWAY from the heart.
More elastic then veins.
Blood flows the lumen which vasodilates/constricts
Pulmonary artery
Carries deoxygenated blood from heart to lungs.
Veins (3 main characteristics)
Bring deoxygenated blood IN the heart
Thinner/less elastic then arteries
Many valves helps deoxygenated blood flow to the heart
Pulmonary vein
Carries oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the heart
Capillaries (4 points)
Microscopic vessels (1 cell thick)
At one end, carry oxygenated blood which bring oxygen and nutrients into the muscles.
At the other end, they carry DEoxygenated blood into the veins, picking up waste products
WHERE GASEOUS EXCHANGE TAKES PLACES
How does the heart pump blood?
Lub dub rhythm
Systolic phase
Where blood is pumped from the atria into ventricles, which contract pushing deoxy blood to leave the right ventricle.
Diastolic phase
Heart relaxes to fill atria with blood.
Blood pressure.
How much force is used to pump boood around your body
E.g. 136/95
First number is systolic
Second is diastolic
Why are red blood cells important?
Transport:
oxygen: lungs ➡️ bodys cells
carbon dioxide: cells ➡️ lungs
Why are white blood cells important?
Defend the body from infections.
Produce antibodies to fight against infections and diseases.
Why are platelets important?
Formed in bone marrow
Fragments that clot together to stop bleeding.
When a vessel is cut, they rush to the area, get sticky and clot/form a scab
What is the imporrtance of plasma?
Take nutrients, hormones and proteins to the parts of thebody that need it.
Cells put their waste inti plasma which then gets removed.
