Soc 10 Flashcards
Anabolic steroids
Drugs that mimic the male sex hormone testosterone and promote bone, muscles and growth
Taken to increase the muscle mass and develop bone growth therefore increasing strength while at the same time allowing the athlete to train harder and recover quicker
Side effects: increased risk of muscle injury, increased risk of heart attacks
Beta blockers
Drugs tht control heart rate and have a calming and have the relaxing effect.
Benifits: beta blockers can help targets for sports where steadiness and precision are required, because they reduce heart rate.
Side effects: nausea, diarrehoea, tiredness, depression, insomnia and mightmares.
Narcotics and analgesics
Drugs that affect mood or behaviour including drousiness and reliving pain.
Analgesics: drugs that elevate the rate of urine production
Benefits: these drugs act by depressing the central nervous system and give relief from painful injuries, but allowing the injured player to take part they can increase the risk of severe or long-lasting.
Side effects: Loss of coordination, loss of balance, loss of concentration and emotional effects
Concussions
Concussion is an injury normally caused by a blow towards the head and happens in many sports
Symptoms: Weakness, Headaches, co-ordination loss
Fracture
A fracture is a broken or had cracked bone that can and will occur from a blow.
In closed: The skin over the break not damaged
Compound: a broken bone protudes through the skin
Simple fracture: take place in one line with no displacement.
Stress fractures: They can happen as a result of fatigue
Different injuries to the bone
Greenstick which break only a part way across the bone.
Transverse break straight across
Impacted pieces locked into eachother
Obliaue break at an angle
Communicated broken into more than two pieces
Dislocation
A dislovation is when a bone at a joint is forces out or its normal position. Often occurs as a result of a hard blow which causes lf the bomes to be displaced.
Symptoms: deformity and swelling of the joint, which is locked out of position.
Torn cartilage
Cartilage is a firm elastic substance which line adjoining bones. It absorbs the impact on the bones while reduciong the friction during sports/ activity
Damage to cartilage often occurs due to wear and tear from long- term overuse.
Sprains
A sprain is a damaged ligament. One of the most common sprain in sport is a twisted ankle
Sprains often occur when streching to far past the normal range of a joint
Symptoms: swelling
Three different types of ankle sprains
Grade I, Grade II, Grade III
Soft tissue injury
Pull and tear on tendons and ligaments which can cause you to be injury prone
Strains
A strain is a tist. Pull or tear of a muscle or a tendon. Most common strains are in the back and the ham strings
