sleep Flashcards
stages of sleep: define the stages of sleep
4 behavioural criteria of sleep
stereotypic or species-specific posture (atonia), minimal movement, reduced responsiveness to external stimuli, reversible after stimulation
what 3 situations are not reversible after stimulation
coma, anaesthesia, death
physiological criteria of sleep: electroencephalogram (EEG)
measures brainwaves
physiological criteria of sleep: electrooculogram (EOG)
measures eye movements
physiological criteria of sleep: electromyogramm (EMG)
measures muscle activity
5 stages of sleep
stages 1 and 2 (NREM) -> stages 3 and 4 (NREM) -> stage 5 (REM)
EEG, EOG and EMG when awake
EEG very active (fast rhythms), EOG varied, EMG expected activity
EEG, EOG and EMG in stages 1 and 2 (NREM)
EEG slower rhythm, EOG flat, EMG less active
EEG, EOG and EMG in stages 3 and 4 (NREM)
EEG slowest rhythm (largest amplitudes), EOG slightly more active
EEG, EOG and EMG in stage 5 (REM)
EOG has huge eye movements, EEG similar rhythm to awake, EMG flat
how long is a single sleep cycle
approx. 90 minutes
how long does each stage of sleep last
stage 1: 12 minutes, stage 2: 12 minutes, stage 3: 12 minutes, stage 4: 12-15 minutes, stage 5: 10 minutes; mutliple sleep cycles
EEG in 5 stages
slows down (sleep spindles in stage II), but becomes similar to awake in stage 5 REM sleep
when do heart rate and respiration increase during sleep cycles
in REM (stage 5)
