Two Halves of Sleep
Core sleep: 1st 5 hours - most of deep (stage 3&4), half of REM sleep
Optional sleep : Next 2+ hours, mostly stage 2&1
Developmental Changes & Sleep
As age increases - total sleep time decreases
Before 10yrs is mostly reduction in REM
After 10yr is mostly reduction in stage 3&4 sleep
Mean Sleep
7.75 hours, circadian rhythm of 25 hours
Dreams
Not always during REM, however, 2x as likely to be during REM
If during REM they are 6x longer and more vivid.
Insomnia
1/3 of population, usually secondary to another problem
Characteristics: Delayed sleep onset, Disturbed sleep, Early morning waking
Caused by: Psychological (anxiety), Medical (pain), Social factors (alcohol)
Treatment: Hypnotics, Sleep education, behavioural changes in sleep hygiene, relaxing techniques
Narcolepsy
0.02-0.05% of population;
Symptoms: Sleep attacks, Cataplexy (paralysis of voluntary muscles) and Vivid onset dreams.
Recovery Sleep – ‘Randy’
Regained 24% lost sleep, priority stage 4 and REM sleep recovered.
