Characteristics of Perception
More than reception and discrimination of stimuli
Uses high level cognitive processes such as memory and thought
Types of cognitive processing
- Bottom-up: Sensory driven, organises incoming information
- Top-down: Driven by knowledge, experience and expectation –> (used to determine perception in ambiguous circumstances)
Properties of Visual Perception
Adaption effects: (adapting to the image itself)
e.g. Existence of after images (staring at the sun)
Depth perception:
2D cues and guidelines allow for interpretation of 3D image
Gestalt (Whole Precept):
Organisational trends occur in visual system - Meaningful groupings Include, Proximity, Similarity, Continuity and Closure

Patients were told to pretend to be hearing voices, were diagnosed with schizophrenia, were all hospitalised, later discharged with schizophrenia in remission, mean 19 days later- perceptive expectations were challenged
