Mother has parental responsibility from birth, father has parental responsibility only if married at birth - responsibilities include; provision of home, protecting child, disciplining the child, providing education and choosing religion, agreeing to medical treatment

- Authoritarian - strict ideas about discipline and behaviour that are non-negotiable
- Authoritative - ideas about discipline are explained and discussed with child
- Permissive - relaxed idea about behaviour and discipline
