What is Parson’s theory on being ill?

A

Being sick is accepted by society.
The individual is exempt from social rules and responsibility.
The individual is not responsible for their condition.
HOWEVER the sick person has an obligation to try and get well and to cooperate with medical professionals.

Common Sense Model of Illness - What are the 3 stages of self regulation?

A

1) REPRESENTATION - Identify illness, the probable cause, timeline (how long its been going on), evaluate the physical and psychological consequences, then attempt to control or cure the illness.
2) Implement a COPING behaviour
3) APPRAISAL - reevaluate the situation.
