consciousness Flashcards
Altered states of consciousness
Sleep and dreams, psychoactive drugs, meditation and hypnosis
Chalmers (1994)
The Hard Problem
To explain how physical processes in the brain give rise to subjective experience
Monitoring consciousness
Attention - you experience what you attend to actively
Intentional blindness - you are blind to what you are unaware of
Controlling consciousness
plan and initiate actions choosing between alternative possibilities
Conscious vs Unconscious
- Always unconsciousness (Visuomotor control)
- Normally unconscious but can be brought under conscious control (breathing)
- Actions learned consciously but become unconscious (playing piano)
- Actions once learned can be conscious or unconscious (driving)
- Always done consciously (recalling a phone number)
Psychoactive drugs
Classified by behavioural effect - sedatives & hypnotics, stimulants, opiates, hallucinogens and psychedelics
Mediation
Concentrative/one point meditation - diminish sensory input,
Open meditation - aware of everything around however not met with response
Hypnosis (Definition)
Kilstrom Interaction whereby an individual responds to suggestions offered by another. Involves alterations in perception, memory and voluntary action.
Either: 1) Altered consciousness - 40%, show a divided stream of consciousness, OR
2) A period of focussed attention, exist in state of suggestibility (60%)
