What causes disibility?
Disibility is the result of impairment caused by disease, trauma or some other health condition
What is impairment?
deviations from the “normal” healthy state.
What is disability?
Restriction of ability (in comparison to normal) as a result of an impairment
What is the biomedical model of disability (3 parts) ? e.g. down’s syndrome
1) IMPAIRMENT (e.g. cognitive impairment)
2) DISABILITY (functional consequence e.g. learning difficulties)
3) HANDICAP (social consequence e.g. limited education)
What 3 social barriers do people with disabilities face?
1) ENVIRONMENT e.g. inaccessibility of places
2) ATTITUDES (prejudice/stereotypes)
3) ORGANISATIONAL (inflexible practices)
What does the equality act do?
Protects disabled people and their carers against discrimination and victimisation
What is victimisation?
to punish of treat people less favourably because they have asserted their rights
