Skull Osteology Flashcards
Whats the difference between a skull and a cranium
skull includes mandible, cranium doesn’t
What are the functions of the skull
– Protect Brain
– Upper part of alimentary and respiratory system
– Protective capsule for organs of sight, hearing and smell
– Close relationship with teeth and oral soft tissues
How many bones is the skull made up of
23
What is the neuro and viscerocranium
Neurocranium - bones of the vault and base
Viscerocranium - bones of the face
Going anti-clockwise starting at the bone that makes up the forehead names the bones of the neurocranium
Frontal Parietal Occipital Temporal Sphenoid Zygomatic (ethmoid??)
Name the parts of the mandible and point out the maxilla
Mandibular condyle
Coronoid process
Mandibular ramus
Mandibular angle
Point out the sutures of the cranium
Coronal, Squamous, sagittal, occipitomastoid and Lambdoid
Point out the sinuses in the skull
Frontal
Ethmoid
Maxillary
Sphenoid
Point out the different foramen in the skull
Supraorbital
Infraorbital
Mental
Last bits i think is point out the cooking ethmoid, lacrimal, vomer, palatine and glabella
OK DADDIO
Whatre the holes in the orbit called
Small hole - optic canal
Larger hole - superior orbital fissure
Name the different processes and regions of the temporal bone
Squamous region external acoustic meatus (EAM) Mastoid region Mastoid process Styloid process tympanic region mandibular fossa and zygomatic process
What is the weakest part of the skull
The pterion
Point out the anterior, middle and posterior cranial fossa
STOP TICKLING ME BASTRAD BITCH
What is the ethmoid bone made out of and point them out
cribriform plate and crista galli
there’s also the olfactory foramina in there
Name the two holes in the temporal bone
anterior one is the internal acoustic meatus and posterior one is the jugular foramen
Name the 3 holes in the sphenoid bone
anterior = foramen rotundum medial = foramen ovale posterior = foramen spinosum
Describe the position of the frontal sinus and where is drains to
– Lies in frontal bone, deep to superciliary arch
– Drain to anterior part of middle meatus
Describe the position of the maxillary sinus and where is drains to
– Largest paired sinus, lie in the body of maxilla;
– Opening into middle nasal meatus
Describe the position of the ethmoidal sinus (cellules) and where is drains to
Lie in ethmoidal bone, contains large number of air cells, divided into anterior, middle and posterior groups
– Anterior and middle groups drain into middle nasal meatus, while posterior group drains into superior nasal meatus
Describe the position of the sphenoid sinus and where is drains to
– Lies in body of sphenoid bone
– Drain into sphenoethmoidal recess
Does the infant skull have more or less bones than the adult one
more
what is different about the mandible and frontal bones in infants
they’re not fused
What are fontanelles and name them
these are unossified remnants of fibrous membranes between fetal skull bones
Anterior, posterior, mastoid and sphenoid
