Blood Supply of the Head and Neck Flashcards
What are the 3 arteries that supply the head and neck
– Common Carotid Artery
– Vertebral Artery
– Subclavian Artery
What connects the right common carotid artery to the aorta
The Brachiocephalic trunk
Where does the left common carotid arise from
Directly from the aorta arch
What does the brachiocephalic trunk divide into
The right subclavian and right common carotid arteries
Where does the common carotid run into
The neck and to the upper border of the thyroid cartilage
What do the left and right common carotids divide into and what do these branches supply
Divides into the internal and external carotids
External supplies the face and neck
Internal supplies the brain and eyes
What does the carotid sheath consist of
The carotid artery (internal i think)
Internal jugular vein
Vagus nerve
Lymph nodes
Name as many of the external carotid artery branches as you can
Superficial temporal Maxillary Facial Lingual Superior thyroid
Where does the maxillary artery arise from and what does it supply
It arises behind the angle of the mandible and supplies the deep structures of the face.
Name the branches of the maxillary artery related to dentistry
Inferior alveolar Posterior superior alveolar Infraorbital Descending palatine Artery of the pterygoid canal and pharyngeal Sphenopalatine
Why is the infraorbital artery relevant to dentistry
Infraorbital artery gives branches to anterior and middle superior alveolar arteries. Their distribution to the maxillary incisors and cuspid teeth and to the maxillary sinuses.
Why is the Post. superior alveolar artery relevant to dentistry
Posterior superior alveolar artery. Its distribution is to the maxillary molar and premolar teeth and gingiva.
Why is the Inferior alveolar artery relevant to dentistry
Inferior alveolar artery. It descends close to the medial surface of the mandibular ramus to the mandibular foramen. Before entering the foramen, it gives off the mylohyoid branch which supplies Tissues in the floor of the mouth.
What are the branches of the facial artery and what do they supply
Sup. and Inf. Labial arteries - upper and lower lips
Angular artery - nose, angle of eye
Describe the course of the superficial temporal artery
arises ant. to the EAM and deep to parotid
What are the branches of the lingual artery
1- dorsal lingual
2- deep lingual
3- sublingual
4- suprahyoid branches
What does the lingual artery supply
It supplies the tissues
superior to the hyoid bone including : 1- suprahyoid muscles 2- floor of the mouth 3- the tongue
What sinus does the internal carotid artery pass through to enter the skull
The cavernous sinus
What is an epidural hepatoma
bleeding between dura and bone
What are the internal carotids branches to the face
Supratrochlear artery
Supraorbital artery
What are the key arteries that supply blood to the brain
Vertebral and basilar arteries
Internal carotid arteries and the Circle of Willis
What role do the vertebral and basilar arteries have to supply blood to the brain
Vertebral - oxygenated blood from subclavian arteries up through the transverse foraminae of the cervical vertebrae to the basilar artery of the brain
Basilar - oxygenated blood from the vertebral arteries to the Circle of Willis of the brain
What role do the internal carotid arteries and circle of willis play in supplying blood to the brain
Internal Carotid arteries - oxygenated blood from common carotid arteries of the neck to the circle of willis
Circle of Willis - oxygenated blood form incoming arteries to deep internal arteries of the brain
