Skull bones Flashcards
What are fontanels
An infant is born with two major soft spots on the top of the head called fontanels. These soft spots are spaces between the bones of the skull where bone formation isn’t complete.
What are the areas wheree the bones interact

What is the weakest point of the skull and why?
Pterion - Union of multiple bones (Sphenoid, temporal, frontal, and parietal), so weakest point.
- Overlies the meningeal artery, so fracture can cause extradural haemorrhage.
What is the functional importance of the fontanelles in the fetus?
- They allow a child to get through childbirth; the bones can move over the top of one another.
- Shoulders can be manipulated.
