Blood supply to brain Flashcards
Where does the vertebral artery branch from?
From the Right Subclavian and the left subclavian.
What are the two main arteries that make up the circle of Willis?
Internal carotid artery
Vertebral artery
What is the system of vessels that supply blood to the brain called ?
Circle of Willis
Where do the internal carotid veins enter the skull ?
carotid canal

Where do the vertebral arteries originate?
Subclavian arteries
What arteries form the basilar artery?
vertebral artery
Between which layers of the brain do the main arteries of the brain run?
Arachnoid and Pia
Through which hole does the internal carotid artery enter the skull?
Carotid canal
Through which hole does the vertebral artery enter the skull?
foramen magnum
Which artery gives off branches that supply the pons?
Basilar artery
The internal cartoid artery directly becomes which artery?
Middle cerebral
What is the most superficial meningeal layer?
Dura Matter
Where does the basilar artery supply ?
The pons
What is the Venous Drainage of the brian ?
- No valves, meaning blood can go in any direction
- Superior and inferior sagittal sinus.
- Great cerebral vein
- All come together to form the confluence of sinuses.
cavernous sinus can get venous blood from elsewhere, why is this important?
- If there’s an infection, e.g. in the nasal cavity, the blood is getting pretty close to the brain, and that’s a risk.
- However, it is protected by the blood-brain barrier.
