Nuerotracts DECENDING A+D Flashcards
What tract is often damaged in Stroke when a person is unable to move their arm ect
Corticospinal tract
What is the corticospinal tract devided into ?
Lateral corticospinal tract
- Responsible for movement of contralateral limbs
- Decussates at medulla in pyramids
Anterior/ventral corticospinal tract
- Responsible for movement of trunk, shoulder, and neck muscles.
- Does not decussate, continues to ipsilateral side.
Is the corticospinal tract ascending or decending ?
Descending
Where is the motor cortex located ?
Frontal love
Damage to the corticospinal tract will result in what?
What is it characterised as ?
What tests check for this ?
Characterised as upper motor neuron
Will result in
- Clonus
- Spascitiy
- Hyperreflexia
- Babinski sign
What is the function of the rubrospinal tract ?
Descending motor tract
The most important function of the rubrospinal tract is the control of muscle tone in flexor muscle groups.
Where does the rubrospinal tract originate ?
Where does it decussate ?
Originates in the red nucleus in the midbrain.
Decussates in midbrain.
Is the rubrospinal cord upper or lower limbs or both ?
It is thought that the rubrospinal tracts supply upper limb flexors as well as trunk flexors. Disinhibition of the rubrospinal tract leads to upper limb flexion.
Inhibition of the rubrospinal tract leads to upper limb extension.
What is the tecto spinal tract/ colliculospinal responsible for ?
++ Responsible auditory and visual for modulating reflex to a stimuli
eg when hearing a loud will turn heard.
Where does the tectospinal tract orginate ?
superior colliculus
Where does the tectospinal/ colliculospinal deccusate ?
Decussates in midbrain as dorsal tegmental decussation
What does the vesitublospinal tract do ?
MAINTAINS BALANCE.
- Descending motor tract
- Facilitates activity of extensor/antigravity muscles and inhibits activity of flexor muscles to maintain balance and an upright posture.
Lateral - controls legs
Medial contains head and neck
What are the two sections of the vestibulotract ?
Lateral vestibulospinal tract controls legs !!
Originates in pons
Does not decussate
Medial vestibulospinal tract controls hed and neck.
Originates from medulla
Does not decussate
