Skull Flashcards
Two groups of bones of the skull and their general inclusions?
- Viscerocranium = bones of the face
2. Neurocranium= bones surrounding the brain
Name the 3 fossa of the neurocranium and which parts of the brain they contain
Anterior fossa- frontal lobes
Middle cranial fossa- temporal lobes
Posterior cranial fossa- brainstem and cerebellum
Middle cranial fossa has a subfossa. What is it called and what does it contain
Hypophysial fossa- pituitary gland
Name the 6 bones of the cranium
Occipital, parietal, temporal, frontal, sphenoid, and ethmoid
What are sutures
Connect the cranial bones
Name the major sutures and their location
- Coronal= between frontal and parietal bones
- Squamous= between temporal and parietal
- Lambdoid= between occipital and parietal
- Sphenosquamous= between sphenoid and temporal
- Sphenofrontal= between sphenoid and frontal
- Sphenoparietal= between sphenoid and parietal
- Sagittal= joins with lambdoid (lamboid runs more horizontal, sagittal runs more vertical along top of head to back)
Name the 8 bones of the viscerocranium
Maxilla, zygomatic, palatine, vomer, nasal, lacrimal, mandible, and inferior nasal concha
