ear
conjunctivitis
inflammation of the conjunctiva- the mucous membrane lining the inside of the eyelid and sclera
cataract
clouding of lens causing impairment of vision/blindness
sty/stye
pus filled infection of the glands near the eyelid
Glaucoma
increase in pressure (fluid accumulation) within the chamber at the front of the eye
ophthalmoscopy
visual examination of the eye
tinnitus
an abnormal nose in the ears such as ringing and buzzing; diagnosed by HEENT (head, eyes, ear, nose and throat doctor)
audiometer
assesses hearing loss; device used to measure hearing by producing acoustic stimuli of specific intensity and frequency
dermatology
study of the skin
melanoma
malignant tumour of pigmented cells (Melan/o= black) that arises from a nevus (benign mole) in the skin
nevus
pigmented lesion; congenital skin blemish (ie. birthmark)
basal cell carcinoma
slowest growing of all skin cancers
ophthalmoscopy
visual examination of the interior of the eye
otoscopy
visual examination of the ear (ot/o = ear)
tuning fork test
vibration source is placed by ear to test air conduction of sound waves and bone conduction of sound waves
fluorescein angiography
injection of dye into the eye to watch the movement of blood in the eye in order to detect retinopathy or macular degeneration of the retina
aspiration
insertion of a hollow needle to withdraw the lens tissue for patient with cataract
phacoemulsification
use of ultrasonic vibrations to break up the lens (phac/o); done during cataract surgery
phac/o
lens
slit-lamp examination (microscopy)
exam anterior eye structures using an instrument that projects intense light through a narrow opening for optimal visualization
miotic
a drug component in eyedrops for patients with glaucoma; improves drainage of the aqueous humor and decreases its production

trich/o
hair
tympan/o
eardrum
alopecia
absence of hair from areas where it normally grows; baldness
bacterial and fungal tests
procedures in which samples from skin lesions are taken to determine the presence of bacterial infection or fungal growth
