lymphatic disorders Flashcards
lymph fluid
lymph/o
lymphaden/o
lymph nodes
splen/o
spleen
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)
supression or deficiency of the immune response dur to lymphocyte destruction after exposure to HIV
human immunodeficiency virus
retrovirus that causes AIDS; transmitted through contact with blood, semen, cervical secretions, breast milk, or synovial fluid; infection of T helper cells eventually destroys immune system
mononucleosis
an acute infection with enlarged lymph nodes and a proliferation of monocytes and lymphocytes in bloodsteam
monocytes
phagocytic leukocyte
sarcoidosis
inflammatory disease characterized by formation of nodules on the lymph nodes or other organs (sarc/o=flesh, -oid= resembling, -osis= abnormal)
myobacterium avivum complex (MAC)
a group of pathogens that cause lung disease and pneumocystitis; caused by AIDS
pneumocystitis (PCP)
opportunistic infection common in AIDS
Lymphoma
fifth most common type of cancer in US; includes malignant neoplasms of lymph nodes and lymph tissue
Hodgkin disease
a major type of lymphoma; malignant disorder characterized by progressive painless enlargement of lymphoid tissue
ELISA
enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay; a test that screens for antibodies to HIV
Western blot
blood test that detects antibodies to a specific antigen in HIV
lymphangiography
lymph nodes and lymph vessels (lymphangi/o) are x-rayed after injection of contrast medium into lymphatic system
