SKILL AQUISITION: skill and ability Flashcards
what is skill?
skill is a learned ability to bring about a pre-determined results often with the minimum outlay or time or energy of both.
three types of skills
motor skills
psychomotor skills/perceptual skills
what is a motor skill
the physical execution of a movement by combining various abilities. each skill requires different abilities to be effective and usually combines cognitive skills.
what is psychomotor skills
this is the capacity to process information, make decisions and execute a movement.
characteristics of skills
A= astetically pleasing
c= consistent
E= efficient
F= fluent
A=accurate
C= controlled
E=economical
what is asetically pleasing?
should look good to watch.
e.g. ice skater performing a pirroret
what is consistent?
high percentage completed correctly.
e.g. number of first severs in a tennis match
what is efficent?
movements carried out as easily as possible to conserve energy.
e.g. marathon runner conserving their energy in the first half of the race.
what is fluent?
movements should be linked to one and another.
e.g. a divers routine
what is accurate?
be on target
e.g. a penalty in football in the bottom corner
what is controlled?
movements need to be done calmly and correctly.
e.g. a forehand cross court
definition of abillities
usually thought of as inherited, innate and generally enduring tasks that an individual possesses
what are the 4 characteristics of abilities?
underpinned skill
inherited/genetic/innate
stable + enduring
limit out potential
what are underpinned abilities?
each skills need to have several underpinning abilities
what is inherited/innate/genetic ability?
we are born with abilities determined by the genes we inherit
what is stable and enduring?
abilities tend to remain the unchanged but can be affected by our environments
two types of abilities
gross motor abilities
psycho motor abilities
what are the six main gross motor abilities?
strength
power
stamina
flexibility
speed
balance
what are the six main psycho motor abilities?
hand-eye co-ordination
reaction time
perceptual awareness
spatial awareness
aiming
fine motor control
what are gross motor abilities?
usually involve movements and are related to physical fitness
what are psycho motor abilities?
ability to process information regarding movement and then put our decisions into actions.
