BIOMECHANICS: levers in the body (section 2) Flashcards
What is a lever?
a lever is a ridged structure which moves around a fixed point called a fulcrum (lever) when two forces unequal in size are applied
what is a lever in a human body?
a bone
what is a fulcrum in a human body?
a joint
what is a load in a human body?
weight- body or object
First class lever
second class lever
third class lever
sporting example of a first class lever
extension at the elbow during an overarm throw or flexion at the neck- when heading a football
sporting example of a second class lever
shooting in netball or foot against the block in starting position
sporting example of a third class lever
bicep curl- flexion at the elbow
what is mechanical advantage?
allows a lever system to move a large load with a relatively small effort. e.g. second class lever at the arm
what is mechanical disadvatage?
the effort would need to be considerably bigger than the load in order to create motion. e.g. third class lever
