What are the two different categories of the skeleton?
- Axial Skeleton - skull, pertibural column, sternum, and ribs.
- Appendicular Skeleton - bones of the upper and lower limbs, the shoulder and hip girdles.
What are the three main types of joints?
- Fibrous Joints - Allow no movement - Skull
- Cartilaginous Joints - Allow some movement - Hip Girdle
- Synovial Joints - Allow the most movement - Shoulder Girdle
Flexion
Decrease in the angle of the joint.
Extension
Increase in the angle of the joint.
Abduction
Movement away from the body.
Adduction
Movement toward the body.
Dorsiflexion
Toes go toward the shin bone.
Plantar Flexion
Pointing the toes toward the floor. (Calf Raise)
Internal/Medial Rotation
Toward the middle of the body. (Pigeon Toed)
External/Lateral Rotation
Toward the outside of the body. (Duck Feet)
Supination
Palms up
Pronation
Palms down
Inversion
Ankle rolls out and weight goes into the outside of your foot.
Eversion
Ankle rolls in and the outside of your foot comes off of the ground.
Sagittal Plane
Right and Left side of the body.
