Nervous System Flashcards
What three things does the Nervous System do?
- Gathers information
- Stores information
- Controls bodily functions
What are the two different parts of the Nervous System?
- Central Nervous System (CNS) - Brain and Spinal Chord
2. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) - Everything outside of the CNS, mainly the nerves.
What are the two different divisions of the PNS?
- Afferent
2. Efferent
Afferent
Sensory Division
Carries impulses to the CNS
Efferent
Motor Division
Carries impulses from the CNS to the PNS
What are the two different divisions of the Efferent (Motor Division)?
- Somatic Nervous System
2. Autonomic Nervous System
Somatic Nervous System
Division of the peripheral nervous system that conducts signals from sensory receptors to the central nervous system (efferent signals) and signals from the CNS to skeletal muscles (afferent signals).
Autonomic Nervous System
The part of nervous system that regulated involuntary body functions, including the activity of the cardiac muscle, smooth muscles, and glands.
Sympathetic Nervous System
Responsible for mobilizing the body’s energy and resources during times of stress and arousal.
Parasympathetic Nervous System
It is involved in regulating the routine functions of they body, such as heartbeat, digestion, and sleeping.
Golgi Tendon Organ
A sensory organ with a tendon that, when stimulated, causes and inhibition of the entire muscle group to protect against too much force.
Autogenic Inhibition
Forced relaxation of the muscle; causing the opposing muscle group to contract.
Muscle Spindle
The sensory organ within a muscle that is sensitive to stretch and thus protects the muscle against too much stretch.
Reciprocal Inhibition
Opposing muscle group relaxes.
