Skeletal System 3 Flashcards
What are Bursae?
Sac-or tea bag like structures that are located in areas of heavy friction such as the knee, and shoulder joints
Structure of Bursae?
Resemble the structure of synovial joints – they contain double membrane filled with fluid
What are Tendon sheaths?
Synovial sheaths that resemble tube-bursae that wrap around tendons to reduce friction
What is the structure of Tendon sheaths?
Contain an outer parietal (connect to bone) and inner visceral layer (connect to tendon surface) which house synovial fluid between them
What are the functions of tendon sheaths?
Enable the free gliding and movement of tendons
What is flexion & extension? (Plane?)
Angular movements that increase or decrease the angle between joints - Sagittal plane
What is flexion?
Bending - decrease of joint angle and an anterior move from the anatomical position
What is extension?
Stretch out - increase of joint angle and return of joint to anatomical position
What is hyperflexion?
Stretching of joint beyond resting anatomical state posteriorly
What is abduction?
Movement away from midline
What is adduction?
Movement towards midline
Which plane do adduction & abduction occur in?
Coronal or frontal plane
What is circumduction?
Combination of flexion, extension, adduction, abduction and rotation & occur mainly in ball-socket joints
What is rotation?
Bone revolves around its longitudinal axis
What is Medial rotation?
Inner rotation towards the midline of body
