Single Displacement Reactions Flashcards

1
Q

Single Displacement

A
  • An element displaces another element in a compound, leading to a new element and new compound as the product
  • A metal and a ionic compound or acid
  • Cation in compound gets displaced

Q

Activity series

A
  • To know if a reaction will occur, you will need to know the position of the metals in the activity series
  • If the element metal is more reactive than the compound metal, the reaction will occur (can remove the compound)
  • If the element metal is less reactive than the compound metal, the reaction will not occur (tighter hold)

Q

The Halogen Activity Series

A
  • Only for single displacement
  • Used when the non metal is displacing an anion in compound
  • Halogens have their own reactivity, and reactivity goes down halogen group

Q

Writing Single displacement problem

A
  • Must include state symbols
  • Must consider charges of elements and if they are diatomic
  • Iodine is a solid and bromine is a liquid (rest halogens is gas)

Q

Metal + water

A
  • Water must be treated as H(OH) and metal displaces with H
  • Metal must be one of the first five on activity series
  • Ca + H2O → CaOH (aq) + H2 (g)
