Ionic compounds
Cation
- First part of name
- If it is multivalent, there will be roman numerals
Ionic compounds Anion
- Second part of name
- If its an element, end changes to -ide
- If its polyatomic, correct naming is needed
Hydrates
- Set number of water molecules attached to a molecules
- Ionic compound that was water attached to it
- Hydrogen is name through prefixes
Molecular Compounds
- More compounds
- Mono and -ide is used for second element
- Prefixes is used
Acids
- Starting formula has hydrogen (s)
- Must have aq symbol
- Expect for water
- They act like molecular compound until dissolved in water
- Break apart like ions would
Binary acids
- Hydrogen and anion
- Formula does not have oxygen
- Has aq
- Start with hydro- and end with -ic
Oxyacid
- Formula includes oxygen
- Can have polyatomic ions
- Names must be changed due to oxygens
- Name does not start with hydrogen, only anion
