Limiting Reactant Flashcards
1
Q
Non-stoichiometric reactant amounts
A
- When you have less or more of a reactant left over
- Left over amounts do not react as they have nothing to react with
- You can only have one limiting reactant
*
2
Q
Mass instead of moles were given: Limiting reactant
A
- Limiting reactants are based of moles not mass
- Write: If the __ was used up, how much __ would you need?
- After finding limiting reactant, you can find amount of product produced
- Excess reactant has left over that is not going to react, meaning you product is not being produced
3
Q
Steps to solve a stoichiometry problem
A
STEP 1:
Convert masses to moles
- Be sure to calculate M values using periodic table
Step 2
- Determine how much of reactant B you would need to completely use up reactant A
- If you don’t have that much B, then B is the limiting reactant.
- If you have more than that amount of B, then A is the limiting reactant.
Step 3
Use moles of limiting reactant to find moles of product
- Use mole ratios from chemical equation to convert from moles of the limiting reactant to moles of the desired product
Step 4
- Convert moles of product to mass of product
