SIDK Flashcards
Evaporite
A water-soluble mineral sediment that results from concentration and crystallization by evaporation from an aqueous solution
Two types of evaporites:
- Marine - formed in the ocean
2. Non-marine - formed in lakes and other standing bodies of water
Contact metamorphism
Metamorphism due to contact with or proximity to an igneous intrusion.
Placer deposit
An accumulation of valuable minerals formed by gravity separation during sedimentary processes.
Substances commercially mined from placer deposits include:
- Diamonds
- Gold
- Titanium
- Rare earth metals
What is the most important factor in determining the movement and creation of sand dunes?
Wind
P-waves vs. S-waves
P-waves (primary)
- can travel through solid + liquid
- expansion/compression
S-waves (secondary)
- only travel through solids
- actual waves
Freshwater resources
Fresh water is only 2.5 percent of the total volume of water on earth.
Of this, 70 percent is in the form of ice and permanent snow cover in mountainous regions, the Antarctic and Arctic regions.
