Lecture 02-15-2017 Flashcards
What are some of the major geological issues related to the creation of hydroelectric dams?
- Evaporation and seepage
- Capture of mineral and sediment intended for downstream
- Disruption of aquatic species’ migration patterns
- Earthquake frequency
Pleistocene epoch: __ millions years BP to ___ years BP
Pleistocene epoch: 2.6 millions years BP to 11,700 years BP
Last ice sheets retreated _____ years ago
10,000
Where is isostatic readjustment still occurring in the Windsor Essex Region? Why?
- Great Lakes Drainage Basin
2. Retreat of glaciers
In regard to changing sea level due to Global Climate Change, what are the two contrasting geomorphological effects taking place?
- Uplift of shoreline from isostatic rebound from retreat of glaciers
- Sea level rise from the melting of ice
Solifluction
- The gradual movement of wet soil or other material down a slope,
- especially where frozen subsoil acts as a barrier to the percolation of water.
Raised beaches
An ancient beach from when sea level was higher at one time (they are really far from the actual beach).
Zone of Ablation
- The area of a glacier where snow and ice experience an annual net loss
- due to melting or evaporation.
Moraine
Any glacially formed accumulation of unconsolidated glacial debris (soil and rock).
What’s another name for glacial till?
Boulder clay, because it’s a chaotic mixture of a huge range of particle sizes (including clay and boulders).
Outwash plain
- The area in front of a glacier
- consisting of gravel, sands and clays
- deposited by meltwater streams
Lacustrine
Relating to or associated with lakes.
Varve
- A pair of thin layers of sediment of contrasting colour and texture that
- represent the deposit of a single year (summer and winter) in a lake.
- Such layers can be used to determine the chronology of glacial sediments.
Advantageous or hazardous to build in areas with a wide range of sediment coarseness?
Hazardous; unpredictable.
