Lecture 01/02/2017 Flashcards
What is a catalytic shift converter OR catalytic methanation associated with?
Gasification of coal
What’s the estimated temp. @ earths core?
aprox. 5000 degrees C
What’s the estimated geothermal gradient range per KM below earths surface?
15 - 75 degrees C per KM below the surface
Where are Canada’s hot springs located?
the Southern Rocky Mountain Region (BC/Berta).
Highlighted issue with solar and wind energy.
variability, intermittency, inconsistency
Highlighted issues with hydroelectric energy (4).
- Disruption of sediment transport/ free movement of native aquatic species
- Destruction of shoreline ecosystems
- Displacement of settled peoples
- Seismic activity
What’s the deal with hydroelectric dams (i.e., reservoirs) triggering seismic activity?
Water follows the path of least resistance, typically along fault lines/fault traces. Reservoirs for hydroelectric dams (especially during high water) exert a downward force on the underlying areas of instability (fault line/trace) which they overlie. This can increase the likelihood of seismic events to occurring within those areas.
Flood tide vs. Ebb tide
Flood tide - movement of tide toward shore
Ebb tide - movement of tide away from shore
Bay of Fundy tides can get up to ___m high.
16 m!
Electrolysis
Separating hydrogen from water.
Biggest problem to overcome across all renewable energy sources?
Energy storage
Ideas for storing energy?
compressed air in underground caverns - Southwestern Ontario is well positioned for this solution b/c of teardrop shaped limestone/salt caverns.
