multi organ damage due to tissue hypoxia

What is Transient Tachypnoea of the Newborn (TTN)?
caused by retained fetal lung fluid due to impaired clearance mechanisms
How does Hydrops foetalis present?
baby is oedematous, has ascites and pleural effusions
What can cause hydrops foetalis?
rhesus disease or chromosome abnormalities
What is necrotising enterocolitis?
perforation of the bowel because it is too weak - common in pre terms
What are the signs of necrotising enterocolitis?
abdominal distension
tenderness
blood in stool
bile vomit
How do you treat necrotising enterocolitis?
stop oral feeding
give antibiotics
How does Meconium ileus present?
at 48hrs the baby is vomiting bile and abdomen is distended
doughy tummy
What causes Meconium ileus?
cystic fibrosis - 1/3rd present with bowel problems
What is a Meconium ileus?
blockage in the small bowel preventing peristalsis
What is a jejunal atresia?
congenital dead end of the bowel
How do jejunal atresias present?
green/bile vomit at 6 hours
How does jejunal atresia look on Xray?
distended bowel
What is malrotation?
DJ flexure is low and medial instead of high and lateral so it twists can lead to necrosis and death of the bowel loops
How does malrotation present?
within 1 month
