Describe the follicular phase?
FSH stimulates ovarian follicle development and granuloa cells to produce oestrogen
oestrogen inhibits FSH
declining FSH causes atresia to all follicles apart from the dominant one
Describe the ovulatory phase?
LH surge starts it
dominant follicle ruptures and releases oocytes
Describe the luteal phase?
formation of the corpus luteum causes progesterone production - peaks at 21 days
When does luteolysis occur?
day 14 post ovulation
degredation of the corpus luteum
What is a normal menstrual cycle length?
28 days
between 21-35 is fine
How much blood is lost during menstruation normally?
<80mls
What is mennorhagia?
prolonged and increased menstrual flow
What is metorrhagia?
regular intermenstrual bleeding
What is polymenorrhea?
menses occurring <21 day interval
What is polymenorrhagia?
prolonged menses and intermenstrual bleeding
What is amenorrhoea?
absence of menstruation >6months
What is oligomenorrhea?
menses of intervals of >35days
What are organic causes of menorrhagia?
fibroids adenomyosis endovervical or endometrial polyp cervical eversion endometrial hyperplasia pelvic inflammatory disease endometriosis malignancy hormone producing tumours sexual trauma IUD
