Shoulder Injuries Flashcards
1
Q
Humeral Fracture
A
- unable to move arm
- pain
- felt or heard a pop
2
Q
Treatment for Humeral Fracture
A
- splint
- check distal pulse
3
Q
AC Sprain/ Separation & Mechanism
A
- impact to the top of shoulder/ lateral tip of shoulder
- falling on oustretched arm
- Bone pop upward/ superiorly
4
Q
Rotator Cuff Strain/ Mechanism
A
- excessive motion beyond the normal range
- repetitive overhead movements
- unable to abduct or externally rotate
5
Q
GH dislocation (glenohumeral jt.) Mechanism
A
- excessive arm abduction with external rotation w/ anterior and inferior displacement
6
Q
GH dislocation ( glenohumeral jt.)
A
- flattened deltoid with severe pain/ disablilty
- complete disruption of joint
7
Q
SC Sprain/ Separation (Sternoclavicular) / Mechanism
A
- falling on lateral side of shoulder
- hit in the sternum with violent force
- can be life-threatening if bone dislocates posteriorly
8
Q
Avulsion Fracture/ Mechanism
A
- Tearing of a piece of bone off w/ ligament
- Most common at the head of humerus
- Immpossible to detect w/out x-ray
9
Q
Labral Tear/ Mechanism
A
- can occur from glenohumeral dislocation
- repetitive movements where arm is pushed posteriorly
- pain deep in the shoulder
- popping/ clicking
10
Q
Brachial Plexus Stretch/ Mechanism
A
- sudden movement where head of humerus is forced into a laterally bent position/ shoulder is pushed into opposite direction
- pain, numbness, tingling, burning sensation
11
Q
Clavicle Fracture/ Mechanism/ Treatment
A
- direct blow to tip of shoulder
- fall on an outstretched arm
- hold arm and tilt head toward affected side/ chin turned to opposite side
- visible or palpable piano key/ step off
- treatment may be surgical or not
12
Q
GH Sublaxation/ Mechanism (glenohumeral jt.)
A
- excessive arm abduction with external rotation w/ anterior and inferior displacement.
- flattened deltoid w/ severe pain and disability
- partial disruption of joint
13
Q
Biceps Rupture/ Mechanism/ treatment
A
- direct blow or severe contractive forces
- unable to flex arm
- lump under skin ( looks like golf ball)
- treatment includes immobilization and surgical repair
14
Q
Impingement/ Mechanism
A
- repetitive overhead movements
- space beneath acromion decreases because of swelling
- tendons and nerves under acromion become irritated
- numbness/ tingling fingers
15
Q
Epiphysis Fracture
A
- Break to the growth plate ( young athlete)
- May cause permanent growth impairment
