Elbow Anatomy/Injuries Flashcards
What are the 2 muscles of the upper arm that act on the Humerus
- Biceps Brachii
- Triceps Brachii
What are the 2 muscle groups of the forearm that act of the wrist?
- Wrist Flexors
- Wrist Extendors
What action does the Biceps Brachii perform on the elbow?
Flexion
What action does the Triceps Brachii perform on the elbow?
Extension
Are most injuries to the elbow acute or from overuse?
Overuse
What is another name for Medial Epicondylitis?
Little League Elbow/ inflammation of wrist flexor tendons
What is another name for Lateral Epicondylitis?
Tennis Elbow
What are the 2 ligaments that get sprained in the elbow? Which one is more common?
- RCL ( Radial Collateral Ligament)
2. UCL (Ulnar Collateral Ligament)- Most Common
What is the top of the Radius called?
Head of Radius
What is the top of the Ulna called?
Olecranon
What is the membrane in between the Radius and Ulna?
Interosseous Membrane
What are the 3 bones of the elbow?
- Humerus
- Radius
- Ulna
What are the 3 ligaments of the elbow?
- RCL (Radial Collateral Ligament)
- UCL (Unlar Collateral Ligament)
- Anular Ligament
Are Fractures of the Humerus a medical emergency?
yes
Is an elbow dislocation a medical emergency?
yes
Which part of Nerve Innervation is from the pinky to the middle of the ring finger?
Ulnar Nerve
Which part of Nerve Innervation is from the middle of the ring finger to the middle of the thumb?
Median Nerve
Which Part of Nerve Innervation is from the middle of the thumb to the rest of your hand?
Radial Nerve
Where is the RCL?
On the epicondyle on the radius side
Where is the UCL?
On the epicondyle and ulna
Where is the Annular Ligament?
On the Radius side connecting the head of the radius to the olecrenon
What kind of joint is the elbow?
Hinge joint
What does the RCL do?
Prevents Varus force
What does the UCL do?
Prevents Valgus force
What does the Annular ligament do?
Encircles the head of the radius and attaches to ulna
Supinator and Biceps Brachii do what?
Supination
Pronator Teres and Pronator Quadratus do what?
Pronation
Wrist Flexors
attach at medial epicondyle of humerus
Wrist Extenders
attach at lateral epicondyles of humerus
Ligament Injuries
1-3 Sprains
RICE
UCL Injury
- most common
- stress placed on elbow
- direct blow
- Valgus stress
Bone Fracture
- to distal end of humerus
- not common
- due to very powerful mechanisms of injury
Epiphyscal & Avulstion Fracture
- more common on medial epicondyle or Olecranon
- severe pain and deformity
Ulna Dislocation
- tight joint
- very traumatic
- violent hyperextension
Olecranon Bursitis
- fluid build up at the tip of elbow
Elbow Flexor Strain
overuse/ resistive forces
Elbow Extensor Strain
Excessive resistance during wrist flexion
